Volkswagen recalls 140,000 SUVs in the US over faulty airbags

Volkswagen is recalling 143,000 of its Atlas SUVs in the United States due to a faulty sensor on the front passenger side that can switch off the airbag system under certain conditions. The automaker has advised owners not to let anyone ride in the front passenger seat until the issue is resolved. The problem, which is sporadic, has been attributed to faulty sensors in some Atlas SUVs that can indicate a system issue and deactivate the airbag. As a result, front seat passengers could be left without protection in the event of a crash. The vehicles being recalled are all model year 2018 through 2021 Atlas and model year 2020 Atlas Cross Sport SUVs.

While Volkswagen has not determined how to fix the problem yet, repairs will be done free of charge once a solution is found. In the meantime, owners of recalled Atlas SUVs will be notified by mail. A warning light will illuminate inside the vehicle if the problem occurs. Concerned owners can also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s auto safety hotline at 1-888-327-4236.

Volkswagen has stated that it is taking this recall seriously and is committed to the safety of its customers. The company has urged owners of the affected SUVs to follow the instructions provided in the recall notice and to contact their local Volkswagen dealer if they have any concerns. With this recall, Volkswagen aims to rectify the issue and ensure that its vehicles meet the highest safety standards. The automaker has a history of providing reliable and safe vehicles to its customers, and this recall underscores its commitment to that goal.
